A lack of water pressure has created supply problems for a number of customers resulting in a temporary overland supply to meet the demand. Waterco were commissioned to design a new water main to replace the overland pipe before the onset of the freezing winter weather.

These works will look to limit future scour and so protect the local railway embankment from the River Dee. Waterco has been instructed to complete a set of hydrology calculations to be used in the design of a proposed culvert on a development site in York. Having approved the calculation methodology with the EA prior to commencement, we used IOH 124 (as the catchment was < 0.5 Ha) to calculate the flood flows for the 1 in 2, 30, 100 return periods. The catchment area was taken from FEH CD-ROM v3.

The FRA will be accompanied by a 1D/2D hydraulic model of the nearby Soar Brook which will be used to assess the flood risk posed to the site from this watercourse. As part of ‘National Flood Risk Awareness Week' (1st – 5th November 2010), Waterco Ltd members of staff will wear their wellies to work on Friday 5th November to raise funds for the National Flood Forum charity which provides support and advice to communities, individuals and businesses that have been flooded or at the risk of flooding.
This autumn marks the 10th anniversary of the Great Autumn Floods of 2000, when North Wales featured in the national news for its severe flooding during the wettest period of rainfall in the UK since records began.
Along with the National Flood Forum and co-founders of the campaign Landmark Information Group, Waterco’s goal is to raise awareness of flood and its potential risks, to ensure that local residents and businesses are not only aware of the risks they face, but also how to mitigate them.

We presented a brief recap on how the long term challenge is to produce Flood Risk Management Plans, which determines long term strategies. We then focused on how policy is currently being put into practice for new developments. Three case studies were presented: tidal breach assessment; river flood modelling; and the impact of pluvial flooding on an area 'not on the flood map'. Finally, as most flood risk relates to existing urban development, the session concluded with a review of the catchment management approach, that can potentially reduce peak run-off 'at source'; and how the assessment techniques currently being used for new developments could readily be adapted for existing uban areas. The seminar was attended by 40 delegates from the local authorities and emergency services across Wales. Other presenters, all on the Business Continuity theme, included Ian Dunlop, Marsh Insurance, Mark Heywood, Sevens Insight and Consulting, Eddie Coventry, Gloucestershire County Council and Robin Goddum, IBM.
