Sewerage and Sewage Treatment

Sewage treatment is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater, primarily from household sewage. It includes physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove these contaminants and produce environmentally safe treated wastewater (or treated effluent). A by-product of sewage treatment is usually a semi-solid waste or slurry, called sewage sludge that has to undergo further treatment before being suitable for disposal or land application.

The management of sewage is critical to our towns and communities and, as well as maintaining existing treatment provision, there is always a requirement for new services around new developments and schemes.

Waterco’s specialist Engineers have years of experience in the design of package sewage treatment plants and can advise on the most appropriate systems for new developments as well as advising on the best way to deal with problems in the performance of existing package plants.

Where a package sewage treatment plant is not performing to the strict standards required by the Environment Agency (EA), Natural Resources Wales (NRW) or Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), prosecution can result. Should this occur, Waterco would work with the client to conduct plant performance assessments to identify the cause of the problem and present options for improvement and/or replacement. Waterco can also provide design input to the chosen solution.

For new developments, Waterco can provide impartial advice and offer an evaluation of the options available for on-site effluent treatment, helping to ensure that clients choose the most efficient and cost effective solution.

Waterco sewerage and sewage treatment services involve:
  • determining requirements, flow rates and loading
  • comparison of different plants and specifications
  • assessment and selection of effluent discharge options
  • liaison with the EA, NRW or SEPA to agree effluent quality
  • tertiary treatment plants for high quality effluent
  • discharge consent
  • layout plans
  • connection details
  • running cost /power usage assessment
  • de-sludging and maintenance requirements
  • whole life costing comparison
  • liaison with local authorities for planning consent and building control.

Waterco works with developers, local authorities, individuals, architects and other consulting Engineers. We have trusted relationships with several package plant manufacturers and are experienced in working with the EA, NRW, and SEPA to achieve discharge consents for projects.
