Water Distribution Systems

The creation of a water distribution system or water network model is an established way to assess the performance of water systems and identify where improvements might be needed.

The important factors in measuring whether a water distribution system is working well for its customers are: water quality, water pressure and the incidence of interruptions to supply.

The Waterco team has considerable experience in water network modelling, as it has evolved from the original non-graphical methods to the current ‘all mains models.’

Efficient and accurate water network models are only possible if the base data used to build them is of high quality, and so the accuracy of the monitoring equipment is a critical factor as is the verification of the model using field measured data.  The availability of the data and its quality can also have considerable bearing on timescales and therefore cost.

Waterco’s experience in water distribution system design includes:
  • new water mains for water companies
  • diversion designs for water companies and developers
  • WIRS accredited mains design (excluding installation) for WIRS providers/ self-lay organisations/ licensed providers in England, Wales and Scotland.
The Waterco design service for water main renewal for water companies includes:
  • feasibility studies
  • detailed design
  • selection of most appropriate materials, sizes and methods, production of layout drawings, longitudinal sections as required
  • connection details, land plans, thrust block design
  • tender documents, Designer’s Risk Assessment, Risk Register, Design Record and calculations
  • geo-environmental assessment
  • client approval reviews and third party liaison such as traffic management notices, environmental permits/ consents, fire service, archaeological and environmental consultations.
The Waterco design service for WIRS accredited mains designs is conducted in accordance with:
  • the Code of Practice for the Self-Laying of Water Mains and Services - England and Wales - 1st and 2nd Edition
  • WRC Water for Scotland - 2nd and 3rd Edition
  • UKWIR advice on brown field sites and contamination and particular water company addenda and guides as appropriate including: detailed design, review of ground contamination, selection of most appropriate materials and sizes, production of layout drawings, Designer’s Risk Assessment, Design Record and fire and rescue service consultations
  • tender documents, Designer’s Risk Assessment, Risk Register, Design Record and calculations
  • geo-environmental assessment
  • client approval reviews and third party liaison such as traffic management notices, environmental permits/ consents, archaeological and environmental consultations.

Waterco has produced network models for a variety of UK water company clients including United Utilities (UU), Dwr Cymru Welsh Water (DCWW), Severn Trent Water (STW) and Anglian Water (AW).

The team has considerable experience in the use of models for various outcomes including:
  • detailed zonal studies - all mains
  • water main rehabilitation - all mains
  • source to tap models - strategic models
  • water quality - all mains
  • pressure management - all mains water resource balancing - upstream losses

Waterco has experience of many modelling packages both in the UK and abroad including Watnet, Wesnet, Ginas5, EPANET, Strumap, SynerGee, Infoworks, Aquis.
